History
The forerunner to ADT was formed in 1874 when several smaller telegraph delivery services merged to form the American District Telegraph Company. The company became a major player in the security protection industry when it began to offer advanced call boxes and multi-signal electric protection systems in the late 1800s.
ADT continued to grow and made another leap forward when it began to offer automated intrusion and other detection systems in response to demand brought on by labour shortages during the war years.
The company went public in 1969, and is listed on the New York Stock Exchange. ADT passed the 1 million customer mark in the mid-1990’s and in 1998 was purchased by Tyco International Limited.
