Atlantic Highlands, NJ – For Laura Martelli and Matthew Rosenzweig, the news came as a shock: They got a call Wednesday morning from the James Beard Foundation, informing them they had been named as semifinalists in the 2016 Restaurant and Chef Awards.
“This is the Oscars of the food industry — we’re thrilled,” Martelli told Patch. “We really have wonderful customers to thank for nominating us, and we have a wonderful team here that supports us.”
Martelli, 29, and Rosensweig, 39, own the 145 First Street bakery together; she’s head chef and he’s pastry chef. The Flaky Tart has been an Atlantic Highlands institution since 2007, but they just took over ownership last year, after several years of working there as employees.
